Fundraiser for Fulton boy battling cancer
A fundraiser will be held this week for Sam Santhuff, of Fulton, who has one of the rarest forms of pediatric cancer. The 5-year-old’s battle withrhabdomyosarcoma (RMS)has earned him the nickname ‘Super Sam.’
He’s was diagnosed in August, and has been traveling to the University of Florida Proton Institute for chemo and surgeries. Sam’s mother, Cassie Santhuff, and her family not only have to pay for their travel expenses, but also 100 percent of their deductible for his treatment.
RMS is the rarest form of cancer in children and the research and technology needed to beat the disease is in high demand. St. Peter School and Church, where Sam and his twin sister Ava attend, are putting on a fundraiserSaturdayevening benefiting Super Sam.
Sam’s mother says, “We need better technology. We need ways to be able to beat this. One out of 5 children don’t beat this. When you stay on an oncology floor and you play those statistics, it’s not enough. And that’s where we need a cure, and for me this is why the benefit is so important. We need a cure.”
The principal of St. Peter School said they have Super Sam Days, where the kids pay one dollar to wear jeans to school, and the fundraiser is just one extra way people can get involved and make a difference.
St. Peter School and First Christian Church are sponsoring the Super Sam benefitthis Saturday from 5 until 8 p.m., at St. Peter Church/School. Admission is free, but a donation is suggested. There will be chili, hot dogs, desserts, drinks and entertainment.
All of the proceeds will go to the Santhuff family for their travel and medical expenses.
