Mistake cost Randolph Co. taxpayers over $25,000

Officials in one Mid-Missouri county have cost taxpayers more than $25,000, according to a new state report.

On Monday the Missouri auditor issued findings for Randolph County, showing 16 employees still had health insurance premiums paid after quitting or getting fired. For two of them, the extra benefits continued for around a year.

Deputy State Auditor Harry Otto says it was human error but could have much worse if the issue went unchecked.

“A glitch is a fine way of saying it was a mistake, a mess up, [but] the bleeding has stopped in the sense that premiums aren’t being paid anymore,” said Otto.

The Randolph County clerk also confirmed on Monday the office has since recovered over $16,000 of the lost money.
