Former Columbia Police Department officer fights to get job back

A former Columbia police officer is fighting to get his job back.

In 2011, Rob Sanders was accused of shoving an inmate in a holding cell. He lost his job over the incident and was charged with assault.

In Oct. 2013, he was found not guilty of the crime.

Friday, he is going before the personnel advisory board, because he thinks he was wrongfully dismissed.

Police Chief Ken Burton testified during the hearing. He said, “What I saw in the video, I could not imagine an excuse for it.” He also explained how he did not take the recommendation from the Internal Affairs report because he felt it was “botched”.

The board will make a recommendation, the city manager will make the final decision.
