Korean War veteran loses home in Veterans Day fire

A veteran of the Korean War lost his home during a fire on Veterans Day.

Around 11:47 a.m., several fire crews were called to the mobile home fire near Henderson Drive and Highway MM in Sunrise Beach.

Firefighters say the fire began in a pile of leaves that spread to a storage shed and the home.

“Thanks to the quick efforts of the firefighters who responded to this incident, the fire did not completely destroy the mobile home,” said Sunrise Beach Fire Chief Dennis Reilly.

The storage shed was fully involved and the home sustained significant damage. The fire was contained to one room, but the entire home had “considerable” smoke damage. No damage estimate was immediately available.

The American Red Cross Heart of Missouri is assisting the veteran and providing financial assistance and personal hygiene products. He is now staying with relatives.

Sunrise Beach firefighters were assisted by the Lake Ozark, Mid-County and Gravois fire protection districts.
