Son accused of killing father in Brunswick
A small town is struggling to understand how a family fight ended with one man dead this weekend.
It happened in Brunswick in Chariton County, about an hour and a half northwest of Columbia.
The family reached out to ABC 17 News Sunday, but asked to not be identified.
The family said David Weil, 26, killed his father, John Piper, by stabbing him to death just after midnight Saturday outside his home at 508 Keyte Street. Weil changed his name from David Moody before he moved to Missouri.
The family said police found Weil at his girlfriend’s house in a neighboring town after she called the police.
On Monday, the Chariton County prosecutor charged Weil with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. He is being held on a $1 million cash-only bond.
One relative of John Piper said Piper, 45, had invited his son to live in Missouri to help him out after he was released from the Kansas Department of Corrections early last year.
The family told ABC 17 News that Weil has spent most of his adult life in prison and has caused problems in the family since he moved here. ABC 17 News found Weil’s criminal record from Kansas dates back to 2008 that listed five pages of charges.
The Chariton County prosecuting attorney said Weil was due in court on Nov. 22 for two assault charges that happened on Sept. 28. He is accused of beating a man so badly, the man had to have reconstructive surgery at University Hospital. He also allegedly assaulted a female that lived with the male victim.
His bond was set at $50,000, but Weil asked a judge to lower it. The judge reduced it to $25,000, allowing Weil to post bond and be released on Oct. 9.
The family says they are shocked that the judge allowed the bond reduction, but the county prosecutor said he had no idea about Weil’s criminal history because of the name change.
Family members said they are mourning the loss of a very important person in their lives and they don’t understand how a son could kill his father.
The Brunswick Police Department, Chariton County Sheriff’s Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol all investigated the case.
