Explosives found near lake in Callaway County

FULTON, MO. (KMIZ)

Sheriff's deputies found explosive devices Wednesday at a conservation area in Callaway County.

Callaway County Sheriff Clay Chism said deputies were sent to the McCredie Farm Lake east of Kingdom City a little before 7 a.m. Deputies found two suspicious objects they believed to be explosives, Chism said. The University of Missouri owns and maintains the area.

Chism said deputies and the Missouri State Highway Patrol bomb squad were sent to the conservation area where they were able to confirm the two suspicious objects were explosive devices. He said the explosives were not located near a common path or a road and they were not objects that could be detonated remotely.

Deputies and troopers searched the area and did not find any additional explosives, he said.

"The objects were found off the beaten path for a lack of better words," Chism said.

The explosives that were located are considered illegal under Missouri law. Chism said investigators don't believe there's any threat to the public.

"We did close the conservation area for a short time but everything else in the area was able to be perceived as normal based off an initial assessment," Chism said.

Chism said investigators are trying to find out how the explosives got there and why. The sheriff's office is the lead agency in the investigation.
