Free flu shots now available for kids

The flu killed 1,300 people in Missouri alone in one year, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

The Boone County Health Department is fighting the spread of the flu by offering flu shots for both kids and adults.

The shots are free for kids ages 6 months to 18. They are $25 for adults over 18.

Andrea Waner with the Boone County Health Department said the shots are free for kids because “they are the most at risk for the illness so we want to make sure they’re protected no matter what.”

If the shot seems like too much to handle, there is also a nasal spray option. The CDC said both are equally effective.

The shot protects against three strains of the flu. The nasal spray covers four.

The flu vaccine is offered every Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the rest of flu season at the Boone County Health Department at 1005 W. Worley St. But health officials do urge people to get the shot earlier than later because it takes two weeks to take effect.
