Home baby video monitors can be hacked into

A parent’s worst nightmare– someone breaking into their child’s room.

Not through the window, but from a video baby monitor. It recently happened in Texas, where an unknown person was able to control one camera and talk to their child.

“If that was happening, I would definitely change monitors,” said Kelsie, a concerned new mom.

Some parents use baby monitors to make sure their children are safe.

“You can hear your child, you know what is going on, you can always run into the room and check on them if something is wrong,” said Daya Feichert, a concerned mom.

But there is a possibility that something else could go wrong: A stranger can virtually break into your home.

“As a new mom you’re concerned about everything. Whether it’s someone hacking into your baby monitor or even thinking about when she grows up,” Kelsie said.

“This day and age, you’re not the only one that can access that information and you need to remember to be a little safer and asknowledgeable about it as possible,” Feichert said.

Whether your monitor is connected through Wi-Fi of the same channel as someone else, both ways can allow anyone, on purpose or even accidentally, access into your home.

Video baby monitors have been known to have this downfall, causingmoms like Feichert to use only sound monitors.

“Being hacked — I definitely wouldn’t use anything where anyone would have access to my child except me,” Feichert said.

“Now after hearing this I will go and check my baby monitor and make sure no one can hack into it,” Kelsie said.

Other parents said they avoid video baby monitors because of this exact reason.

Another mom pointed out that children have been growing up without video monitors for years, and she sees no reason to use one now.

Experts say creating a customized password for your Wi-Fi can make your home more secure.
