RR Donnelley is the latest addition to disturbing list of Mid-Missouri business closures
The planned closure of RR Donnelley is just the latest addition to the laundry list of businesses going elsewhere or closing in Mid-Missouri.
In the past 18 months, there have been more than ten companies to go out of business. The majority of those came from just three cities: Boonville, Moberly and Mexico. It amounts to hundreds of Mid-Missourians out of jobs.
Since late 2011, the majority of jobs lost were mainly factory jobs. The hardest hit is Boonville. In a span of about two months in late 2012, Hostess and Indeeco closed their doors, leaving about 150 people looking for work.
The bad news didn’t stop there. A few months ago, NORDYNE announced it was moving its operations across the border to Mexico. It affects about 200 workers.
Unfortunately, Boonville isn’t the only area experiencing job loss. In Dec. 2011, more than 30 jobs were lost in Mexico, Mo. at Mid America Brick. It cost the city and the state millions of dollars.
Moberly has also been affected. The town was promised hundreds of jobs in the failed artificial sweetener plant, Mamtek. It also lost its Social Security office around the same time. In April, the career center was closed.
The state’s Department of Economic Development tells ABC 17 News they do several things to keep jobs in the state. Officials say they have programs to help employees update their skills. They also help companies out to keep business competitive. Officials also said they work with companies to try and find alternative measures that could help keep the doors from closing.
