Bank of America building evacuated due to small fire

A downtown bank was evacuated Monday morning due to a small fire.

Columbia Fire Department crews responded to the Bank of America on Cherry Street around 11 a.m. and found a small fire in the air handling unit on the second floor of the building.

Firefighters extinguished the fire in the equipment room and discovered significant smoke in the area as well.

Fire crews were able to put out the fire and clear the smoke quickly. There is no word on why the fire started and a damage estimate was not yet available.

Bank employees were able to return to the building about one hour later.
