Emergency crews shut down I-70 due to accident

A Friday morning accident prompted emergency crews to shut down both lanes of I-70 near the Highway 63 connector.

The interstate was closed for about 15 minutes.

According to the Columbia Police Department, traffic ahead of the tractor-trailer stopped abruptly, causing the driver to veer off the side of the road to avoid hitting cars. The tractor-trailer then rolled over in the median.

Police say the tractor-trailer was carrying anhydrous ammonia, but none spilled.

The driver, Joseph E. Johnson, 64, of Hardin, Mo. was transported to University Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash is still under investigation.
