13th annual Lunch in the Park launches

When school gets out and the free school lunch program ends, many children are left hungry in the summer months.

However, one local group has a program that helps fight that problem.

Lunch in the Park is a U.S. Department of Agriculture-funded service that provides free lunches every weekday for kids ages two through 18. Organizers say it costs about $1,500 a week to fund the program.

The lunches are nutritious and served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Douglass Park. Officials say they feed about 100 children each day.

Besides lunch, children can enjoy free books, live music and crafts.

The program runs through August 9. There are no qualifications to receive the food.
