Shooting and police chase suspect pleads not guilty

A Mid-Missouri man pleaded not guilty to charges he shot his girlfriend during an assault last month.

Alfonso Rodriguez, 34, was formally arraigned in a Boone County courthouse Monday and entered a not guilty plea to charges of armed criminal action, first-degree assault and resisting arrest.

Police told ABC 17 News Rodriguez shot Gisela Angel-Lopez, 20, in the neck inthe 5600 block of South Route K on May 26.

She was taken to University Hospital initially with life-threatening injuries. As of Tuesday evening, Angel-Lopez is in serious condition.

Rodriguezwas taken into custody during a police chase on eastbound Interstate 70 after police used a spike stripto deflate his tires, just west of the Highway 63 connector.

Police say Rodriguez was the boyfriend of Angel-Lopez.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 12.
