Train company looks to cut back on collisions

Cole County is the No. 1 county in the state when it comes to vehicle/train collisions.

It is one of 13 counties that Union Pacific’s Operation Lifesaver has targeted to create awareness about railway safety.

In the past three years, one death, one injury and property damage have resulted from train collisions in Cole County.

“They’re big, they’re fast, and they don’t stop quickly,” Ricky Mooney of Operation Safety said of trains.

It can take a train going 50 miles per hour over a mile to stop. Operation Lifesaver urges people to pay attention to the flashing lights and railway signs and not to take risks.
