Jefferson City leaders meet to discuss possible downtown parking garage

Members of the Jefferson City Council held a special meeting Tuesday evening.

According to sources, council members are discussing a real estate purchase on High Street.

City leaders want to build another parking garage behind Hawthorn Bank in downtown Jefferson City.

Before the Transform Jefferson City Tax failed last year, leaders looked at various buildings to demolish so there could be a walkway to High Street.

There is no word yet on how large the potential parking garage might be or how it would be funded since the transform tax failed. However, the city’s parking fund has about $2 million from parking meters and revenue from the city’s other garages.

Sources say a parking garage costs about $16,000 per space to build. That means the city already has enough money to build a 125-space garage.
