Waner wins Ward 2 Columbia City Council seat

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The chair of Columbia's Human Rights Commission has won an open seat on the Columbia City Council.

Andrea Waner, took the seat currently held by Mike Trapp, who decided not to seek reelection, over Bill Weitkemper and Jim Meyer. Waner received 1,069 votes compared to 782 for Meyer and 195 for Weitkemper.

Ward 2 includes much of northwestern Columbia.

Andrea Waner's website describes her as a public health expert and civil rights advocate. Waner serves as Columbia's Human Rights Commission chair.

According to Waner's website, she worked to broaden Columbia's nationally recognized workplace, fair-housing and civil-rights ordinances to include contractors.

Bill Weitkemper worked for the City of Columbia for 37.5 years. He has shared many of his stances on his Facebook page.

"A performance audit of the finance and utilities departments of the city by the state auditor’s office is the only way to restore the public's trust in city government," Weitkemper said.

Jim Meyer says he's running because, as a business owner, a veteran and a civic leader, he can offer a more balanced perspective about the issues facing the city.

Meyer is endorsed by The Columbia Police Officers' Association and The Columbia Board of Realtors. Meyer is a real estate broker.

"If elected, I will work to restore the proper balance between the just use of government power and proper respect for the liberty of the people," Meyer said.
