Two arrested for thefts at Columbia library, auto dealer

Columbia police arrested two teenagers for several thefts, including one at the Columbia Public Library.

Police say 18-year-old Derek David and 17-year-old Robert Worthington were arrested for stealing items from a home, the library and a Joe Machens dealership.

Officers detained both David and Worthington on April 8 and say David stole a library staff card to get into a locked employee-only area.

Officers recovered an Apple iPad that was stolen from the library on March 29 and a laptop from a burglary that was reported on April 7 on S. William Street. Police also say David stole an iPhone from the Joe Machens Mercedes Imports dealership and sold it to a kiosk at the Columbia Mall.

While searching David’s backpack, police found a glass smoking device that had a strong marijuana smell.

David was arrested on two counts of second degree burglary, two counts of felony stealing, first degree trespass and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $19,000 and he remains in the Boone County Jail as of Tuesday afternoon.

Worthington was arrested on charges of second degree burglary and felony stealing with a bond of $9,000. He remains in the Boone County Jail as of Tuesday afternoon.
