Icy roads cause dangerous driving conditions

Sleet and snow created slick roads and highways across mid-Missouri Sunday night.

There were 50 crashes on Missouri Highways Sunday, dozens along Interstate 70.

Both MODOT and Columbia Public Works said they have crews working overnight to prepare the roads for the morning commute.

But the extreme temperatures are causing some challenges. Crews are having to mix salt with cinders because road temperatures are keeping salt from working as effectively as usual.

Columbia Public Works said they would be hitting the priority routes with the salt and cinders mixture overnight.

MODOT will treat highways and other priority routes across the state.

Battalion Chief Gale Blomenkamp told ABC 17 News the Boone County Fire Protection District had responded to about five serious crashes on Interstate 70 alone Saturday night.

That did not include dozens of reported slideoffs on the interstate. One crash had traffic moving slowly through Columbia near the Lake of the Woods exit.

A rollover crash shut down Route B just outside the Hallsville city limits around 7:30 p.m. Saturday. One person had to be cut from the SUV in that crash. There was no update on the injuries as of Saturday at 11:30 p.m.

In Columbia, a multiple car crash shut down West Broadway near the Hy-Vee for nearly an hour Saturday night as well.

MoDOT issued a “no travel advisory” for the state through Sunday night because of the snow and ice in the forecast.

All of central Missouri remained under a Winter Storm Warning through early Monday.
