Missouri AG Eric Schmitt announces run for U.S. Senate
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt announced his plans to run for Roy Blunt's US Senate seat Wednesday morning.
The announcement comes just two days after former Gov. Eric Greitens said he's planning on running for the same seat.
Schmitt made the statement in an interview with Fox News. Greitens also made his announcement on Fox News.
In the interview, Schmitt said he will stand up for former President Donald Trump's agenda.
"As AG I defended Trump and the America First agenda and all of the prosperity that came with that," Schmitt said. "Now, I'm spending my time pushing back against Joe Biden."
Schmitt has served as the state's attorney general since 2019. He was appointed by Gov. Mike Parson in November 2018 after Josh Hawley was elected to the US Senate.
He also won election in 2020 defeating Democratic challenger Rich Finneran. Schmitt's term as AG is not up until 2025.
Schmitt has previously served in the state legislature and as Missouri State Treasurer.
Schmitt was among more than a dozen state attorneys general, as well as, state and federal lawmakers calling for an investigation into the election results of multiple battleground states.
