Gun Found on School Property

A 13-year-old male is currently in an Audrain County juvenile center after hiding a loaded gun on school property.According to the Audrain County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a report of a teenager in possession of a gun on Monday. Deputies later learned that the juvenile was at Mexico Middle School for an after school activity.Officials found the juvenile and the gun, which the teenager had hidden on school property but outside of the school building. Authorities say the gun was found near the concessions building by the soccer field.The Sheriff’s Office says there is no indication that the juvenile had planned to use the gun at school.The Sheriff’s Office, Mexico Public Safety Department and Mexico Public Schools are continuing to investigate. MPS Superintendent Kevin Freeman says there were never any threats made to the schools.Parents of students at the school, however, are frustrated over the slow response from school officials. Some parents who talked to ABC 17 News say they were not informed of the incident until Wednesday afternoon, even after asking school leaders about it earlier.School leaders say they became aware of the issue Tuesday morning and sent out a press release to local media in Mexico, however, some parents still did not hear about the incident.
