Holiday Brings Burglary Risk

Columbia police are asking residents and students to take precautions before the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.Officers say those who leave for extended periods of time have an increased risk of becoming a victim of burglary. Because of that increase risk, officers will be increasing patrols in certain neighborhoods that have been identified as “higher potential targets.” Police will also be using plainclothes personnel and unmarked vehicles for their patrols.Police are asking residents to:- Leave ample exterior/interior lights on, or use timers- Arrange for pickup of mail, newspapers, and packages- Ensure all doors and windows are secure- Disable automatic garage doors- Take expensive items with them (laptops, cameras)- Give the residence the appearance that someone is home. Columbia police say anyone should notify police immediately if they witness any suspicious activity.
