First Frontier Flight Flies

***UPDATE 5 P.M.***Frontier’s inaugural flight from Columbia to Orlando departed with just two empty seats. Columbia Regional Airport officials say the turnout for Tuesday’s flight was so impressive, that the airline is already thinking about adding a third weekly flight next year.Currently, the flights leave twice a week, on Tuesday and Saturday. Frontier has not completely committed to new flights, but airline officials say since Delta is leaving, it provides them with more opportunity to expand at the airport.Frontier did not receive financial incentives like American Airlines did, but the airline is getting one year of landing fees waived. It’s unclear if Frontier was to add more flights if there would be any financial incentives added.***ORIGINAL STORY***The first Frontier Airlines flight to leave Columbia Regional Airport takes off Tuesday afternoon following a celebration by the Columbia Chamber of Commerce.The event begins at 2 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3:30. The flight for Orlando, Florida will then take off at 4:15. The Airbus plane can seat 138 passengers. Representatives from Columbia, Jefferson City, Moberly and Callaway County will be at the celebration today.Columbia Regional Airport is working toward adding American Airlines flights to/from Chicago and Dallas-Fort Worth starting next year. Delta plans to end its flights from Columbia to/from Atlanta and Memphis in February over what it called a better deal given to American.
