Arrest Made Following Pursuit

***UPDATE MONDAY 2:40 P.M.***The Maries County Prosecutor charged David Williams with felony second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and felony resisting arrest. The prosecutor says the assault charge resulted from Williams recklessly placing an officer in danger by driving a car toward the officer’s vehicle at a high rate of speed.Williams remains in the Maries County Jail on a $250,000 bond. Officials say Williams has also tried to assault a Sheriff’s deputy while in jail.The Sheriff’s Office expects several traffic violations and other charges to be filed later, both in Maries and Pulaski counties. ***ORIGINAL STORY***Maries County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man after a high speed chase early Sunday morning.The Sheriff’s Office says deputies were checking on a stranded driver along Highway 63 in Vichy when David L. Williams, 31, of St. Clair pulled up next to the deputies and asked if they wanted to race.Williams then sped away from the deputies in a car that matched a stolen vehicle description from Crocker. Deputies pursued Williams, at times traveling in excess of 90 mph through Vienna. In order to stop Williams, a Vienna officer fired two shots into the engine compartment of the vehicle, before law enforcement successfully blocked in Williams and the vehicle.Deputies say Williams refused to leave the car or open the door, so they had to break out the window to remove him. They say he appeared to be impaired and possibly under the influence of drugs.He is currently in the Maries County Jail awaiting charges to be filed. The Sheriff’s Office expects Williams to be charged with felony driving while revoked, tampering with a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, felony assault on a law enforcement officer, and possession of stolen property.Sheriff’s deputies say they recovered suspected stolen property in the vehicle. They also say Williams is currently on probation for tampering with a motor vehicle and had been previously convicted of stealing a car in 2010.
