Oldest Building to Come Down
Columbia’s oldest building is on the chopping block.The Niedermeyer building, currently home to several apartments, has been slated for demolition. That’s according to a notice posted on the property this weekend.City guidelines given the Historic Preservation Commission a ten day waiting period to discuss the proposal and offer a recommendation about demolition. The Niedermeyer building has stood at the corner of Tenth Street and Cherry Street since the mid-1800s.Residents at the building said they had heard of plans to build a high-rise student apartment complex. The issue could come up at Monday’s city council meeting.
