Storm Causes Power Outages

***UPDATE 11 A.M.***Columbia Power and Light confirms that this morning’s large power outage in the city was caused by two overhead electrical lines coming into contact with each other. A spokesperson says 450 customers were affected, but power has been restored.The utility company is now dealing with six to eight other smaller outages. Crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible.Columbia Power and Light says the high winds are causing the electrical problems.***UPDATE 10:25 A.M.***Electric officials confirm the Columbia Regional Airport is currently without power.***ORIGINAL STORY***Thursday morning’s snow and high winds are causing numerous power outages.A large power outage has affected a central portion of the city near Providence Road, I-70, Vandiver Drive, Highway 63 and New Haven Road. Columbia Water and Light says a transformer blew in the area due to high winds.Columbia Public Schools reported that sporadic power outages are affecting New Haven and West Junior schools.Boone County Emergency Management is reporting several outages in the county and city, which could cause some traffic signals to no work. They are urging drivers to use caution at intersections.Outages are also being reported in Moberly and Marshall.Otterville R-VI Schools are dismissing early at 10:45 a.m. due to an outage in the area.
