More Troopers Out For New Years

***UPDATE Friday 9:23 P.M.***The Missouri Highway Patrol estimated that every 15 minutes, someone got injured or killed on Missouri roads last year during the New Year’s weekend. But despite the increase of deaths from 5 in 2010 to 6 in 2011, total number of crashes and injuries have gone down. ABC 17 News compiled data from the state troopers on the New Year’s crash counts for the past three years and it is going on a downward trend. Total crashes dropped from 1,198 in 2009 to 777 in 2011. The number of injuries have gone down from 386 injuries in 2009, to 311 in 2011. ***ORIGINAL STORY***Extra law enforcement will be monitoring New Years Eve traffic. Missouri Highway Patrol is gearing up for another round of busy roadways and holiday traffic. The New Years traffic crash counting period starts up tonight and will run until 11:59 p.m. New Year’s Day. All available Highway Patrol officers will be working during that time. In 2011, there were nearly 800 crashes over the New Years holiday in Missouri. That includes six deaths and more than 300 injuries.
