Man Settles CPD Lawsuit
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) – A man who alleges Columbia police used excessive force during his 2009 arrest has agreed to settle his federal lawsuit for $55,000.The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that David Riley was awarded the settlement after a pre-trial conference last week.Riley was treated for a broken bone in his left arm, facial lacerations, head and neck trauma and chest pain after his September 2009 arrest on suspicion of resisting arrest and second-degree robbery. He later pleaded guilty to the resisting arrest charge.The arrest came after Riley encountered a plainclothes officer who was at a store checking to make sure alcohol wasn’t being sold to underage people. The officer alleged Riley threatened to rob him. Riley claims he thought the officer was going to assault or rob him.
