Tracking an icy start to the new year

TODAY: Some light flakes may continue to fall throughout the afternoon but dry air will push that out by this evening. Temperatures will stick to just above freezing for most of the afternoon and lows tonight will dip into the mid-20s.

THURSDAY: New Year's Eve will start off chilly but clear as temps hang right around freezing. Wintry conditions begin kicking up into the evening as another system threatens to bring widespread ice to mid-Missouri. Precipitation will start off as mixed for counties to the south starting right around dinnertime. As the evening goes on, however, icy conditions will become widespread and continuous overnight. Ice accumulations could range from 0.1"-0.25".

EXTENDED: The New Year's system will begin lifting to the north on Friday morning but still look out for some lingering ice falling, mainly north of I-70. Expect roads to be slick on Friday morning. Thankfully this system will leave the area by the weekend but there's a small chance for some lingering snow showers on Saturday. Temperatures will stay chilly through the New Year, but we look to warm into the 40s by the start of next week.
