DHSS director authorizes medical professionals to give Moderna vaccine

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Randall Williams, director of the Department of Health and Senior Services signs a standing order for the Moderna vaccine Sunday.

The order authorizes licensed physicians, advanced practice registered nurses and more to give the vaccine.

In a statement, Williams said the first week of vaccinations in the state has gone extremely well.

"Our supply from our federal partners will dictate the speed at which these vaccinations can continue to occur, and we will continue to be flexible and adapt to any changes that may be presented to us," he said.

According to a press release from the department, it is now recommended individuals who get the vaccine from Moderna or Pfizer are monitored by their provider for 15 minutes following vaccination.

Some common side effects which typically last several days include headache, tiredness, muscle pain, chills and more.

"Shipments received from Pfizer and Moderna this week will continue to serve the most vulnerable to COVID-19 -- our patient-facing health care workers and long-term care staff and residents," Williams said in a statement.
