2019 ties for the hottest September on record at COU
September saw twenty-nine days of at or above average temperatures with the lone below average reading on the first day of the month.
This month also featured ten 90+ days which is tied for 8th most ever for the month.
While daily high temperatures over-performed, it was the muggy overnight lows that rarely fell out of the low 70s and upper 60s that helped inflate the average temperature for the month.
What felt like the summer that would never end continues, even into October. Highs are forecast in the upper 80s and low 90s today.
If we do hit 90 today, it would be the 44th time we’ve hit 90 or more in October ever… that may seem like a lot, but when you take every October day for the past 130 years (4030 days to be exact)… that’s about a 1% chance.
If you’re wondering why it’s been so hot, look no further than high pressure. We talked about it last week. The strong, tropical high that resides in the southern Atlantic made its presence know not only to mid-Missouri, but to a large chunk of the southeastern United States.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International was a balmy 96 degrees yesterday (9/30/2019) afternoon.
As has been advertised for the past couple of days, much, much, much cooler weather is in store Thursday and beyond– an extended stretch of below normal temperatures is likely as we close out the first week of October.
So we’ve managed to deal with most everything weather-wise so far in 2019– from the near record-setting snowfall in January, to ice storms in February, the bitter cold to start March and of course the record flooding & spring tornadoes… It’s been a wild ride as we approach the close of the decade!
