Jefferson City Council approves demolition for building damaged by tornado

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Jefferson City Council unanimously approved a demolition project for a building on East Capitol Avenue during its Monday night meeting.

City officials said the building at 519 E. Capitol Ave. was damaged in the May 2019 tornado.

Jefferson City went through the bidding process twice and agreed on an $87,000 low bid from Premier Demolition.

Monday night, the city council approved $12,600 in additional funding from the city's general fund to pay for the project.

Jefferson City's director of planning and protective services, Sonny Sanders, said the city initially earmarked $75,000 for the project.

"It's collapsing and falling down, it's important to take this building down as soon as possible," Sanders said.

Councilmen suspended the rules on the voting process and approved the funding and contract on a second reading.
