Powerful storm system brings strong thunderstorms, major cool down

A potent fall weather system is upon us as we wrap up the work week in Mid-Missouri. Snow has been falling across the Rockies and central Plains, and that cool air will move into our area by Friday.

Showers and thunderstorms have been ongoing across central Missouri since early Thursday morning, bringing between 1-3″ of rain through mid-afternoon. This first batch of storms continues to exit, but another line of storms is developing along the cold front in Kansas.

Some of those initial storms have the potential of becoming severe with instability increasing a bit across western and southwest Missouri. Low level wind shear will provide support for a few rotating storms, so we will keep a close eye on the threat for strong thunderstorms across our southern counties around the Lake of the Ozarks and Truman Lake into this evening.

As the cold front cuts across Mid-Missouri tonight, temperatures will bottom out in the low 40s for Friday morning, with wind chills in the 30s. As skies clear on Friday, we only reach the upper 40s for highs. Temperatures drop on Friday night into the low 30s, so patchy frost is possible for a few areas that see lighter winds.

Temperatures warm into the upper 50s on Saturday and lower 60s on Sunday with plenty of sunshine for Mizzou homecoming weekend.
