COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia firefighters said a house fire called out Monday morning started outside the home.

A news release sent out Tuesday morning from assistant fire chief Brad Fraizer said crews responded to a residence in the 1100 block of Pannell Street at 9:06 a.m. and had the blaze out in minutes.

Firefighters said smoke appeared to be coming from the basement. Investigators said the fire started in a rear, exterior wall and was quickly put out.

The release said the fire caused about $1,000 of damage.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Fraizer said it's unknown what caused the fire. He added the residence was vacant when crews arrived.

Crews said on Monday no people were hurt in the fire. Eight fire crews responded to the scene.
