Shooting investigation underway near St. Martins, one in custody
The Cole County Sheriff confirmed deputies are investigating a shooting near St. Martins which left one in the hospital.
Cole County Sheriff John Wheeler told ABC17 News deputies responded to a weapons offense that resulted from what they believe to be a "road rage incident."
Wheeler said in a tweet at 3:15p.m. one person is in custody, and another was transported to University Hospital after being shot in the leg. He said the injury was non-life threatening.
Route T at Elston and Old Stage Road was closed until around 4:45 p.m. as officials were investigating the scene.
Wheeler said this is still an active investigation and the department is following multiple leads.
"There were sevral witnesses to this," Wheeler said. "Some of them stayed here, some of them went to the hospital because it was a relative, so we're spread pretty thin right now, trying to gather all the information we can."
Wheeler said their were three people involved in the incident. Neighbors who witnessed the scene told ABC17 News there was a large crowd of people.
Wheeler said believes they have at least identified everybody involved in the incident.
"The first rule to any investigation is, truthfully, you don't want to take anything for granted," Wheeler said. "You want to run down every single thing that out there, and that's what we're in the process of."
"Now it's just a matter of taking the time, and it's a considerable time to sit down and talk to everyone involved, make sure we have a good timeline and series of events that lead up to this as well as occurred during," Wheeler said.
ABC17 crews on the scene saw three Cole County Sheriff's vehicles and two Missouri State Highway Patrol vehicles around 3 p.m.
