Jefferson City man sentenced to prison for Columbia rape
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Jefferson City man was sentenced to seven years in prison Friday for raping a woman he met in downtown Columbia in April 2017.
A jury convicted Jemell Butler of second-degree rape in January. A prosecutor said during the trial that Butler raped the woman in a wooded area off Oak Street after walking with her for about 30 minutes. The victim tried to fight Butler off, according to the prosecutor.
A separate jury acquitted Butler in 2016 of sexually assaulting a woman he met on the internet, but did convict him of stealing the woman's phone as he tried to run away from her. Prosecutors dropped a sodomy charge against Butler in another case in which he pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery and felonious restraint.
Butler will serve the seven-year sentence after completing a sentence he is already serving in another case.
