CPS Board of Education to talk about return plans

The Columbia Public Schools Board of Education will talk about students' and teachers' return to classes at its meeting tonight.

The board will be presented a revised reopening plan for the 2020-21 school year.

As of Monday morning, the start date for CPS is set for Aug. 24. With the school year approaching so quickly, families want answers as to what school is going to look like this year with COVID-19 and all things considered.

CPS leaders will get together at 5:30 to move forward on a possible delayed start and hybrid model of learning.

On August 4, the board held a special session where the health department recommended a delay in the school district's start date.

The revised plan put forth a possible start date of September 8. That would buy families three weeks to figure out what the method of learning will look like this year.

The board is looking at three models for learning: a hybrid model where 50 percent of students will attend school during the week, an online model where students are taught by CPS teachers online and an in-person option where students are taught by CPS teachers at their schools when health department recommendations allow.

The board will also discuss staff hires, staff leave of absences, bids on construction and the funding for school supplies like Chromebooks.A board of education executive closed session will follow at 6:30
