A Randolph County Sheriff's Department employee was fired this week after releasing body camera footage without authorization, violating department policy.

Randolph County Sheriff Mark Nichols on Friday confirmed a report of the employee's firing. Nichols did not disclose the fired employee's position to ABC 17 News but said part of the employee's job was protecting body camera footage.

Nichols said he doesn't believe any other videos were leaked and that the case was not forwarded to prosecutors after investigation.

When pressed for details about the video Nichols said a story reported on the Alpha Media radio website centralmoinfo.com was accurate. The story says the video, which was posted on social media by a Randolph County resident, shows a sheriff's deputy taking a harassment complaint against a department employee.

The story says the person who lodged the complaint provided no evidence and later retracted it.
