Salute to America kicks off Friday

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Jefferson City kicks off the holiday weekend with Salute to America on Friday.

The Missouri American Water Carnival Land is set to open at noon on Capital Avenue. The carnival will be open until 10 p.m. and will reopen from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday. The carnival will open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday as well.

The “Red, White and Bloom” parade will take to High, Jefferson and East Miller Streets starting at 6 p.m. Friday.

Then on Saturday, the “Red, White and Boom” fireworks show is set to start at 9:45 p.m.

In a press release Tuesday, the Jefferson City Police Department said it would have increased staffing at the festival after a fight broke out and gun shots were fired at a carnival at the Capital Mall on June 26.

Organizers with Salute to America said they also hired a private security company for certain areas of the festival after a large fight at the 2019 festival.

There will be precautions amid the COVID-19 pandemic as well, including shorter hours, hand washing stations throughout and social distance markers.
