Federal grand jury indicts man accused in Cole County Jail shooting

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A federal grand jury has indicted a man accused of shooting himself in the Cole County Jail on a firearms charge.

Brandon Eugene McNeese was indicted Wednesday on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

McNeese is the man Sheriff John Wheeler said shot himself inside the Cole County Jail in November. McNeese had been in the jail since a federal grand jury indicted him on drug and firearms charges in 2018.

The shooting sent McNeese to a hospital but he was released soon afterward.

The indictment does not describe the circumstances of the crime McNeese is accused of. However, the document says the crime happened on Nov. 25 -- the same day as the jail shooting -- in Cole County.

The gun McNeese allegedly possessed was a .22-caliber pistol, according to the indictment.

McNeese remained in federal custody this week, according to court documents.

The charge is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
