Columbia protests continue overnight

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Downtown Columbia protests continued into early Tuesday morning at the intersection of Broadway and Providence Road.

Hundreds of protesters held signs and chanted for justice for George Floyd, the unarmed black man who died on Memorial Day in Minneapolis police custody.

The protests started early Monday evening outside Columbia City Hall before moving to the Columbia Police Department around 9:15 p.m. and the intersection around 11:30 p.m.

During the demonstrations, police were called to the Walgreens on Broadway to investigate after rocks were thrown through several windows at the business.

After several hours, protesters moved from the intersection to the parking lot of Walgreens' and took a knee in front of officers, asking them to do the same. Officers took a knee alongside the protesters before the crowd started to disperse.

Protests are expected to continue Tuesday night.
