MU permanently closes Adult Day Connection program amid COVID-19 pandemic

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The University of Missouri has decided to permanently close a program amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Adult Day Connection program falls under the School of Health Professions. According to the school’s website, the program has provided care for adults for more than 25 years.

Adult Day Connection was temporarily suspended in March, but leaders made the decision not to reopen it this week. University spokeswoman Liz McCune said the decision was not an easy one to make.

“It was a very difficult decision to close down the Adult Day Connection as we know how important this program was to clients and families. However, client safety is our No. 1 priority and we know that Adult Day Connection clients are among the most vulnerable to COVID-19,” McCune said.

As of March 18, the program has 32 active clients, but not all of them were full time.

“...we are reaching out to them individually and connecting them with local services appropriate for their needs,” McCune said.

McCune said closing the program will result in some position eliminations, but did not specify how many. She said the university will help employees find other positions when possible.

The statement on the school’s website thanked those involved with the program.

“We are grateful for the support of donors and community partners over the years, and we are committed to continuing to serve our community through other clinics and outreach programs,” the statement said.
