New partnership between MU and Special Olympics
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Special Olympics of Missouri announced a new partnership with the University of Missouri System Wednesday.
The announcement was held at the Aquatic Mezzanine in the Mizzou Rec at 11:30 a.m.
The new relationship includes the University of Missouri System schools and MU Health Care. MU officials said the partnership could lead to added research in human development, social work, medicine and education.
State Special Olympics president Susan Stegeman said both entities can affect many lives around the state.
"We have barely scratched the surface in terms of how we can combine our resources in order to impact lives across the state," Stegeman said.
State Special Olympics events will be held in Columbia in 2020. The annual athletic event was held for the past three years in Springfield.
According to the announcement, Missouri Special Olympics serves thousands of people across the state. The organization has around 16,400 athletes that compete each year. More than 1,000 coaches and about 30,000 volunteers attend the events.
