Holts Summit teen charged in Jefferson City killing
COLE COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Holts Summit teen was charged with first-degree murder on Wednesday in connection with a killing on Rolling Hills Drive in Jefferson City.
Devin L. Schrimpf, 17, was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the killing of Marquise Conley, 18.
Police responded to the 1900 block of Rolling Hills Drive just after 3 a.m. Thursday in response to a shooting victim. When police arrived, they found Conley dead from gunshot wounds in the back bedroom, according to court documents filed on Wednesday.
"At this point, based on the evidence we have, we believe there was enough deliberation in there to warrant first-degree murder charges," said Cole County Prosecutor Locke Thompson. "When you're looking at first-degree versus second-degree murder, that is the key turning factor; whether or not there was deliberation. Some thought went into the process or the planning of the murder."
A witness told police Schrimpf had called the home multiple times before the killing and said he would "shoot the place up," court documents said. A woman who lived at the home told police Schrimpf came to the home earlier in the day and was angry to find another man living there, according to the probable cause statement.
The woman was admitted to St. Mary's hospital just after 1 a.m. on Thursday morning for an unknown reason. Schrimpf went to the hospital to see her after the shooting happened, court documents said.
The woman told police that Schrimpf said "it's just me and you; it's always going to be me and you," while visiting her in the hospital.
Schrimpf was arrested and told police during an interview that he was at the home earlier in the day, court documents said.
Police said Schrimpf gave inconsistent information and was "deceptive" during the interview.
Another juvenile is also in police custody, according to JCPD spokesman Lt. David Williams.
Schrimpf is being held in the Callaway County Jail.
Jefferson City police said Tuesday that CrimeStoppers is offering a $500 reward for information in the case.
