CDC recommends wearing cloth masks in public settings
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges everyone, essential workers or not, to wear masks in public settings.
The CDC recommends wearing cloth masks where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain like grocery stores and pharmacies, especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.
Columbia and Boone County Health Officials said the cloth face coverings should fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face.
"Cloth masks should be secured with ties or ear loops," said Lucio Bitoy with Columbia and Boone County Public Health and Human Services. "Include multiple layers of fabric, allow for breathing without restriction and be able to be washed and machine dried without damage or change to shape."
The CDC also advises the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus. The measure could help prevent those who may unknowingly have the virus from transmitting it to others.
Cloth face coverings made from regular household items like a t-shirt or bandana can be used as an additional voluntary public health measure.
Columbia and Boone County health officials said cloth masks should be routinely washed in the washing machine depending on the frequency of use.
When it is time to safely remove the mask from your face, the CDC recommends being careful not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth when removing it and to wash your hands immediately after it’s removed.
The CDC does not recommend masks for children under two, anyone who has trouble breathing or anyone unable to remove the mask without assistance.
The CDC's website provides many useful tips and tutorials on how to make your own cloth masks out of household items like t-shirts and bandanas.
