Weather Alert Day: Tracking strong storms with large hail later today

Afternoon Update:

Temperatures have skyrocketed into the 80s across Mid-Missouri with increasing southwest winds. A cold front has started to develop storms to our north that are capable of producing large hail.

Synopsis:

A strong cold front will slide southeast across the area overnight, bringing the chance for storms and much cooler air behind it. Plenty of instability will be available to get strong storms to develop as the front moves into Mid-Missouri this afternoon.

Timing/Impacts:

Storms will get going near the front across northern Missouri by late afternoon. A broken line of strong storms will slide into our northern counties near Highway 24 by 4-5PM, and progress southeast through the evening. Expect storms in the I-70 corridor and Columbia/Jefferson City area between 6-7PM, and south of Highway 50 after 7-8PM. Our severe weather threat will decrease by late evening as the front moves out of the viewing area by 9-10PM.

All modes of severe weather will be possible, but we are especially concerned with the risk for large hail up to the size of golf balls or greater. Damaging winds in excess of 50-60 mph are possible, along with a low risk for tornadoes.
