JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Cole County prosecutors charged a Springfield, Missouri, woman Tuesday with leaving the scene of a crash where a bicyclist died.

Haily Crabtree, 26, is charged with a single count of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, a Class D felony. Police found Crabtree after the crash, which happened at about 6 p.m. Monday on Highway 50, when her vehicle was stalled in the westbound lanes.

Police were called to the area around 6 p.m. Monday in reference to debris in the area, according to a news release from the Jefferson City Police Department. Officers found a bicycle on the side of the road and Eric N. Krauter, 51, of Slaughter, Louisiana, on the side of the roadway.

Krauter was pronounced dead at the scene.

Krauter was allegedly hit by the passenger side door of Crabtree's Ford Fusion.

Crabtree allegedly continued driving on Highway 50 after hitting Krauter until her vehicle became inoperative, police said. In a probable cause statement police said Crabtree had left a home in Belle, Missouri, and her vehicle hit a box that had fallen from a truck. She later said she might have fallen asleep while driving and woken up at impact, the statement says.

Crabtree was not hurt in the crash.

Police matched the damage on Crabtree's Fusion to car parts left behind at the crash scene, according to the statement. She allegedly told police she didn't stop after the crash because she was scared.

Crabtree remained in the Cole County Jail on Tuesday without bond. No hearings had been set in her case and no lawyer was listed for her in online court records.
