Mid-Missourians take to the polls

Several mid-Missouri counties are holding elections Tuesday.

Some of the main items on the ballots include sewage systems, law enforcement funding and raising lodging taxes to fund tourism promotion.

Three cities in Boone, Randolph and Monroe counties have sewage or wastewater systems up for a vote.

Hallsville is looking to sell its sewage operations. The city is considering several companies, along with the city itself, to upgrade the system.

Each company seeks to prevent wastewater leaks and help the system keep up with city growth.

The city currently has a permit for a no-discharge system. City officials told ABC 17 News they still had overflow concerns.

The Department of Natural Resources has issued violations for several overflows, but it has not collected fines, according to city leaders.

In Howard County, citizens in New Franklin will vote on a tax levy that would go toward the New Franklin R-I School District. The money would contribute to upgrading schools, buying school supplies and technology and paying employees.

In Callaway County, voters will see sales tax increases on the ballot. One measure would increase taxes 0.5 percent, which would go toward law enforcement. Another measure would increase taxes 0.5 percent to go toward a new government building.

Meanwhile, Morgan, Miller and Camden counties' business districts are proposing increases to lodging taxes to fund tourism promotion.
