Tracking dangerous heat over the weekend

TODAY: Friday is another ABC17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Day, with heat still in the forecast. Heat indexes are forecast in the 103-107 range for areas currently under an Extreme Heat Warning. We'll be sunny and likely dry, though models suggest a spot shower or two is possible this evening in the south near I-44.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear skies and warm temperatures are once again forecast overnight, with lows in the 70s early Saturday.

EXTENDED: Our last Weather Alert Day for now is Saturday, when heat and humidity likely peak ahead of a weak cold front that works in over the weekend. A spot storm or two is possible on Saturday, but most will stay dry. Heat will dominate, with heat indexes above 105 degrees possible. Behind the cold front, a slight cooldown is expected, but it won't be much relief from the heat, as temperatures remain hot. Highs are forecast in the mid-to-low 90s Sunday through Thursday of next week. Our next decent chance at rain may have to wait until Thursday of next week, when the upper-level ridge that has been driving our heat flattens and allows the jet stream to drop south into the mid-Mississippi River Valley.
