Tracking extreme heat today, relief on the way

THIS AFTERNOON: Sunny and dangerously hot, with a heat index of 105 to 110 degrees.

TONIGHT: Hot in the evening, with the heat index in the 90s until almost midnight. Lows fall to the upper 70s.

EXTENDED: Dangerous heat lasts through Tuesday, with an ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Day in effect for a heat index up to 105 degrees. A cold front will finally bring relief late tomorrow, setting off a round of scattered showers and storms Tuesday afternoon and evening. Some areas could see over a half-inch of rain, and everyone will get a break from the worst of the heat. Temperatures drop slightly to the upper 80s midweek, and the heat index falls back to the 90s. Still hot, but nothing out of the ordinary for this time of year. Another round of rain moves in late week between Thursday and Saturday, dropping temperatures into the mid-80s this weekend.
