Tracking a hot and humid Tuesday followed by a big cool down

TONIGHT: Mostly clear and muggy with lows in the upper 70s.

TOMORROW: Partly to mostly sunny, hot and humid with a low chance for a few showers and storms before noon. Highs in the lower 90s with a heat index between 100-105.

EXTENDED: Intense heat and humidity will come to an end for the rest of the week tomorrow as a cold front sweeps in from the north, bringing in cooler temperatures and a drier air mass. We could see a few showers and storms along the front north of I-70 overnight into the morning, but we won't feel the effects of the front until Wednesday as morning temperatures drop into the upper 60s. Wednesday is looking beautiful on the northern side of the front as highs only make the low 80s. Thursday looks similar, but the upper pattern will take on a northwesterly flow regime, allowing some of the smoke from still-burning Canadian wildfires to filter into the area. That may bring the air quality down to unhealthy for sensitive groups between Tuesday and Thursday. We'll also see a disturbance move through that could trigger a round of showers and storms between late Thursday night and Friday, bringing about 0.5" to 1" of rain to Mid-Missouri. Severe weather isn't expected, but pockets of brief heavy rain and lightning will be possible. Rain looks to clear out for the weekend as high pressure moves east again off the Plains, bringing temperatures back into the low 90s by Sunday.
